VITAMIN D

I awoke at 7:10 in this morning, this weekend’s 21-mile near-marathon still pulsing in my thighs. I am scheduled to work on a brick walkway with Bob, but kind of hoping the rain will finally burst through the cloud cover and keep me indoors. My hamstrings need not suffer any more indignity and I can use a free day to work on my latest catalogue stiffener, a new album of sun-themed music called Vitamin D.

Advertisers, when looking for aural backdrops from which to ply their wares, most often search for music that leans strongly on the noun ‘sun’ and the verb ‘shine.’ This is an undisputed fact; look it up if you don’t believe me. Undisputed fact 2: advertisers pay out the wazoo for these innocuous bits of hokum. Undisputed fact 3: I am currently laying brick sidewalks to pay the bills. Do the math.

Over the years, I have been urged by various publishers and songpluggers, towards the cause of providing a more respectable income, to write more music that dallies in these themes. Up to this point, reality has kept me firmly grounded in more earthly pursuits. But the eternal drudgery of the Nashville’s coldest Winter in 31 years has finally brought out the glow in me. The sky’s stayed gray for most of December, January and February. I literally had to write myself out of a serious case of Seasonal Affective Disorder. I feel that I can now pursue the project with my balls tight and precious integrity intact.

But I like these little ditties, all short and limited to one subject: Vitamin D euphoria. Vitamin D is produced by our bodies when we are exposed to sunlight. It makes us happy. Until we are burnt to a crisp. Here are the songs I have finished thusfar:

1. On A Sunny Day

2. We Are The Sun

3. The Sun On Our Shoulders

4. Sunrise

5. Let Your Sun Shine Out

6. The Happiest Day

7. Let It Shine

I think I should do three more to make it a proper piece.

I will soon be posting some of these songs here when I can figure out how to get an MP3 player posted. If anyone has suggestions regarding this maneuver (posting an MP3 player to which I can upload music) I would certainly welcome them.Thanks.

He’s alive!

So glad to hear something from you David, you have been very quiet of late in the internet world. Sorry to hear that times are a little tough at the moment, your music is so beautiful and exquisite I am sure that you will eventually get the acclaim that you fully deserve, it never ceases to amaze me that you are not a household name already.

I have been listening to all of your albums a lot lately and it really makes me want to see a live show. I guess that coming to the UK (or Europe would do!) is probably the least of your concerns at the moment, but one day hopefully.

That said, something has been plaguing me. In late 2000, did you support Vertical Horizon in London at the Camden Underworld? I remember a singer songwriter, who had lost his guitar during the trip and having to borrow one from the band and him being very flustered! Was that you?

Anyway, wishing you the best of health and happiness and looking forward to hearing your new, sunny songs very soon!

Best regards,
Michelle

Michelle-

Yes, that was me in Camden. I remember that show because I had been playing to Brits for a month and that particular gig seemed to be full of Americans. Thanks for your very kind words about my music. I don't mean to sound like times are really tough, because they are actually great (check out my badass sidewalk!) and I am very happy. I will be updating here and elsewhere a lot more in the immediate future so be sure to keep checking in.

Best,

David

Hi David,
I've been using soundclick.com for uploading my songs. It's linked directly to Facebook and is a great way to post .mp3s. Check it out if you don't already know about it.

Glad you linked this blog, David. I didn't realize you had one, so a very pleasant surprise.

I remember the days when the only info I could get about an artist was from whatever they wrote on the liner notes of their albums. I could be all nostalgic for the old days before information overload, but this is WAY better in this particular case.

Hope the new "sunny" David Mead music is a big hit so you can make it back up this way (Columbus, OH) soon. I saw you at a little place here many moons ago and it was a definite highlight of that year. I even got to talk to you a bit after...remember you saying you were hanging at the YMCA before the show for some reason. Not sure why that sticks in my mind. Either way, next time let me know & I'll tell you some nice places to go, so you don't have to hang out at the gym. Poor guy.

All the best and looking forward to the new music!

Leland... thanks for the tip. If anything goes wrong with this one I will get onto soundclick.com faster than a fly on shit.

Blake... thanks for coming to that show in Columbus. If memory serves, you were one of four or five, so even madder props to you. If it makes you feel any better, I was probably just swimming laps at the Y.

Will... Willy P? Miss you too, buddy. I think I've got an extended NYC foray happening around E's wedding and I am looking forward to sharing some quality with you. Hope you are well.

Sincerely,

David

Swwweeet sunshine, baby.
Love the bright and shiny new sunshine songs. I feel like I've been hibernating for months and could really use something golden to help shake off the grumpiness and re-emerge into light and colors. I admire your pathways, brick and the less tangible kind.

Kristin, I love that damn baby. I'll do anything he wants. Can you bring us a picture for the house on Sunday?

Linda, I am so glad you like the song. I got a bunch more for you and your fellow Michiganders to thaw out to. Miss you, Besos!

David,

Enjoying the new music! Thanks!

An injustice to humanity that you're laying bricks but I know all too well the situation.

Keep fighting the good fight and don't stop making the important music you make.

Best,
Mark
